ALBUM Review: 'Norman Fucking Rockwell!'-Lana Del Rey

Ever since she arrived on the music scene in 2012 with 'Video Games', there has been something so original about Lana Del Rey and she carries this uniqueness into her much anticipated sixth studio album (fifth under a major label).

This album is gripping from the very start, especially with the title track's brazen lyrics. It's almost a new Lana that we're hearing from, one who is more assertive and commanding.

'Mariners Apartment Complex' is a sophisticated amalgamation of country and orchestral music. “This song is kinda about this time I took a walk late at night with the guy I was seeing and we stopped in front of his friend’s apartment complex,” Lana told Annie Mac, “and he put his hands on my shoulder and he said ‘I think we’re together because we’re both really similar, we’re both really messed up’.

'Venice Bitch' is a nine and a half minute song, which is quite emotional and showcases Del Rey's insanely good vocals.

'Venice Bitch' is followed by 'Fuck It I Love You', another slow, soft rock song but one which captivates.

'Norman Fucking Rockwell!' was mainly co-written and co-produced by serial collaborator Jack Antonoff, who has also worked with Taylor Swift, Lord, St. Vincent and Pink.

There are familiar themes ("Lying on your chest in my party dress/ I'm a fucking mess"), however in 'The Greatest' Del Rey comments on the state of America by throwing in pop culture references to blonde Kanye Wests.

'Doin' Time', her latest single, is a cover of Sublime's 1996 song.

The album ends with "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have-but I have it" which is sublime. It's the perfect way to end an album like this, with listeners left wanting more.

This album isn't going to be for everyone. If you're not already a Lana fan, this may not be one for you but if -like me- you are a fan, then this could well be one of the best album's you'll hear this year. Lana Del Rey has worked her magic once again with 'Norman Fucking Rockwell!'
